I Built Barcode Because I Needed It.
I graduated in the top 10% of my law school class with Latin honors, completed the Honors Program, and earned multiple CALI Awards for achieving the highest grade in several of my courses.
I knew the law. I understood the law. That wasn’t the problem.
I used traditional bar prep. I watched the prerecorded lectures. I worked through the outlines. I studied the way I was told I was supposed to study.
I failed the bar.
And that forced me to ask a different question.
If I knew the law, why couldn’t I perform when it counted?
The answer changed the way I thought about bar prep.
The bar exam doesn’t simply ask whether you know the law. It gives you a fact pattern, buries issues inside it, puts you under severe time pressure, and demands that you recognize what’s being tested, retrieve the law you need, and apply it to the facts in front of you.
I didn’t need another outline.

I needed to train for that moment.
So I changed the way I prepared.
I started visualizing the law so I could see how rules, exceptions, and issues connected. I trained myself to recognize the patterns examiners use to test those rules. I worked on retrieving the law without digging through pages of notes and then immediately putting it to work against a set of facts.
I stopped training to consume information. I started training to use it.
